My game keeps freezing or crashing

Following are some troubleshooting steps that may help solve crashes/lock-ups you’re experiencing.

(Note: we’d recommend removing any mods you have installed to see if this helps fix the crash or freeze you’re experiencing).

Right click “No Man’s Sky” in your Steam Library

Ensure “Automatic Updates” is set to “High Priority”

Select “View No Man’s Sky Update history” to see the latest patch release.

GOG Galaxy

Click the “More” button

Click “Settings”

Change “Install Updates” is to “Manually”

Ensure the most recent version of No Man’s Sky is selected in the “Rollback to Version” section.

Click “NMS” folder

Steam users will find their save files in a folder similar to “st_12345678901234567”

GOG Galaxy users will find their save files in a folder named “Default User.

This folder contains all your No Man’s Sky save data, please create a new folder called “backup” and copy all of the files in this directory into your “backup” folder.

Once you have backed up your saves, please delete the files in the “NMS” directory and try re-running the game.

4: Try deleting your Shader Cache.
You shader cache files are located in the following directory:

5: Please ensure that your Game Client is completely up to date, we have had reports of players encountering crashes on older versions of Steam (which they had previously thought was up to date).

Steam:

Open your Steam Client

Click on the “Steam” tab on the top left of the screen

Select “Check for Steam Client Updates”

GOG Galaxy:

Currently the GOG Galaxy client automatically downloads any client updates regardless of settings.

Please ensure you have no internet connectivity issues and try restarting GOG Galaxy.

*Note: If you take part in Steam or GOG Galaxy Beta programs we cannot always guarantee No Man’s Sky compatibilty right away as these clients are still in development.
